Charge creation, finite size effects, and infra-red photons in simulations of QCD plus QED

Many groups are now interested in combining QCD and QED on the lattice. Simulations with massless photons bring new infra-red and finite size issues.
When we simulate an electrically charged hadron on the lattice we do several odd things. We create charged particles from the vacuum, violating conservation of charge. We use periodic boundary conditions, which don't allow a net outward electrical flux, and thus lead to a contradiction of Gauss' Law. By looking at simple models we try to understand how much effect these shortcomings produce, and how best to correct for them.
